Spring 2015 Jr/Sophomore Screening

Come check out the raw, unfiltered creativity of our uarts juniors & sophomores, unleashed at the end of the semester screening in connelly auditorium on may 5th, 7pm!

Work will include individual personal shorts by the juniors (their first go at a self-directed short), as well as work from intro to computer, 2d computer, and other classes.

This is a chance to see the efforts of young, fresh artists, unfettered by experience, with all the energy and charm of a moment that only happens once.

Titles & Credits

Hi Class,

Here are notes to consider when coming up with your titles and credits. Most animators are not necessarily born graphic artists, but it pays to make sure that your title and credits are an organic part of your film that add to your message, look, and feel.

Titles
• typeface should reflect the mood and character of the piece: difference between poster and body typefaces; serif and sans serif typefaces
-        serif = classic, sober, formal
-        sans serif: modern, clean
• Title: should be able to be read twice, slowly while it is onscreen.
• think of the title as a graphic: a single shape with a contour that can be read quickly and easily: letters closer together than for body copy, adjust spacing between individual letters
• color should relate to the palette of the piece
• action and title safe (demo in After Effects: be aware of cutoffs
• vertical center is slightly above mathematical center

Credits
• create blocks of information via spacing and alignment (name, role):bold, italic, size differentiation
• leave “air” around elements to make them easy on the eye and to create content hierarchies
• make sure they are readable against the background
• need sound under them: don’t run credits without sound
• UArts logo integrated, along with copyright (you, not UArts)
• limit the number of people mentioned (author, helpers, family)
• decide on: cuts, crawl, dissolve, or other

• film can run over into credits to a reasonable length

06 apr 15 - week 11

Progress as per Blog Production Calendars:

Tim:
• sh01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 11 cleaned

calendar revised to: Revise completed shots, fix backgrounds, work on title card
notes: What revisions did you make to the shots and backgrounds? Post title card.

Mee:
• sh 17, 18, 19 keyed *from last week
• sh 20, 21, 23 animated
*19 animated, 20 keyed
notes: concerned about overall progress. At this point, we should be halfway through cleanup: Try creating rough drawings without construction lines that can be used as final drawings. Focus on keys rather than in-betweens.

Chris:
• *nothing indicated on Production Calendar

Meghan:
• In-betweened &Colored): S03, S04, S05, S12, S13, S14, S15
notes: Good progress. Experiment with pin tool animation of flowers; consider POV when using blur effect.

James:
• sh14,sh15,sh16,sh18, Animated(shots 14 & 15 were finished, was not able to get to 16 and 18) *from last week
• sh19,sh20,sh21 Animated
• sh1,sh2,sh3,sh4,sh5, Cleaned & Colored, Composited

* sh1,sh09,sh08,sh07, Cleaned & Colored, Composited

notes: Production Calendar revised.

Cynthia:
catch up week
• Finish animating keyed shots 22-24
• finish last shots
• color

notes: Good progress. Finish animating remaining shots. Throw finished shots into animatic to get a sense of overall pacing - feels like it needs some tightening.

Andrew:
sh01, 23, 08, 09 animated

notes: one traceback without the tracebacks, one still image, one eyelid opening; too little, too late: Need to make significantly more weekly progress in order to finish this piece successfully.

Dre:
• Animated shots 13, 14
• next week?

Animated shots 5,7,16,19 Background 16

notes: finish unfinished (yellow) shots and then move on to compositing.

Ra'shon:
• *nothing indicated on Production Calendar
• Rough of first 30 seconds/keys of 8-15 (keys done for sh08-15)

notes: More than last week, which is good, but there is still a lot of catching up to do. Draw keys as final drawings (i.e. no construction lines). Focus on composition and storytelling points: what's the character's project? Why is she worried about time? Does she have only a few hours to finish the project? or is this a matter of days/weeks, as her calendar would seem to imply?

Greg:
• Tower April6-13 (*50% this week)

notes: update calendar, add finished shots to animatic

Marc:
• Shots 13, 14, 19, 22

notes: good progress.
